The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde/books/The-strange-case-of-Dr-Jekyll-and-Mr-Hyde-Robert-Louis-Stevenson by Robert Louis Stevenson (1886). Short enough for one sitting, with a twist everyone knows and no one forgets.

About gothic & horror
Gothic fiction began in the 1790s with crumbling castles and persecuted heroines, and grew through the nineteenth century into the stories that still define horror: Mary Shelley's creature, Stevenson's divided doctor, Stoker's count. By the early twentieth century, writers such as M. R. James, Algernon Blackwood and H. P.
Lovecraft had turned the haunted house inside out and pointed it at the cosmos. Read them in order and watch fear change shape.
