How it works
Discovery you can understand
Principle 01
Shelves
Editorial shelves are chosen by people
Our editorial shelves, including the BookMarket 5, Debuts, Reading Room lists and the collections in our classics library, are chosen by named members of the BookMarket desk. Publishers and authors can't pay to be on them.
Editors must declare any personal or professional connection to a book they pick, and they don't select books by friends or family.
Principle 02
Automatic Shelves
Automatic shelves follow published rules
Some shelves are calculated, not curated. Each one does exactly what its label says: Most-read this week Titles with the most reading sessions started in the last 7 days
New on BookMarket Newest independent titles by publish date (classics excluded)
Recommended for you AI-assisted, based on your activity on BookMarket (see AI at BookMarket/ai)
Principle 03
Search
How search results are ranked
Search results are ranked by how well a book matches what you typed: title, author, series, description and genre. Popularity on BookMarket and verified ratings break ties. Paid placements, if we ever offer them, never change the order of organic results.
Principle 04
Reviews
Reviews come from verified readers
live.
We never buy, sell or invent reviews, and authors can't review their own books or offer anything in exchange for a review.
We don't hide negative reviews. We remove reviews only for breaking our rules: spam, hate, personal information, spoilers without warning, or reviews of something other than the book.
Star averages appear only once a book has at least 3 verified ratings.
Principle 05
Labels
Labels you can rely on
Label Meaning
Public
domain
A classic in the US public domain, free to read. The book page names its source edition.
AI disclosed The author disclosed AI use. The book page lists the specific label: AI-generated text · AI-edited text · AI-
generated images · AI translation · AI-narrated
Sponsored Paid placement, if we ever offer it, always labeled and kept separate from editorial shelves
Principle 06
Review Before Listing
Every book is reviewed before it goes on sale
Our team checks every new independent book, and every file update, before it reaches the shelves: files open correctly, metadata is accurate, AI use is disclosed, and the book meets our content guidelines/publish/content-guidelines. Review is about standards, not taste: we don't reject books for being unfashionable.
Principle 07
Corrections
Corrections and contact
If you spot a mislabeled book, a wrong date or a review that breaks our rules, tell us at support@bookmarket.ai.
We correct factual errors promptly and note significant corrections on Reading Room articles. Copyright concerns go to dmca@bookmarket.ai.
