A Shropshire Lad

"A Shropshire Lad" by A. E. Housman is a collection of 63 poems published in 1896. Set in a half-imaginary pastoral Shropshire, these verses explore the fleeting nature of youth, love, and life itself. Soldiers march to early graves, young men face heartbreak and loss, and spring's beauty masks mortality's shadow. The poems resonated deeply with generations of young readers, especially during wartime, becoming companions in trenches and schoolrooms alike. Housman crafts a melancholic landscape where idealism fades and death awaits. (This is an automatically generated summary.)
