Introduction
Digital rights management (DRM) is software that restricts how an ebook file can be copied or opened. Whether to use it is one of the first settings indie authors face.

How It Works
How DRM works
Stores that sell files (EPUB, Kindle formats) can encrypt them so they open only in authorized apps or devices.
Without DRM, a buyer can move the file between devices, and copy it.

What changed on Amazon
KDP authors choose DRM when they publish. Amazon now lets authors change that setting at any time, with the change taking effect in about 24–72 hours. And since January 20, 2026, readers can download EPUB or PDF copies of Kindle books their authors published without DRM.
