It begins by addressing the nature of moods and how they affect our ability to work and interact with others, emphasizing the importance of willpower over fleeting feelings. The opening of the collection sets a contemplative tone as the author shares personal reflections on the impact of seasons and moods on productivity and creativity. Holland recalls moments from his childhood to illustrate the allure of nature and the challenges of focusing on tasks amidst distractions. He challenges the romantic notion of the moody artist, advocating instead for the power of discipline and regularity in achieving success in any endeavor.
