Edinburgh

"Edinburgh: Picturesque Notes" by Robert Louis Stevenson is a non-fiction travel book first published in December 1878. This tribute to Stevenson's birthplace guides readers through Edinburgh's streets, from the Old Town to Calton Hill, blending personal observations with historical detail. Stevenson doesn't romanticize his beloved city—he explores its darker history, including plague victims, notorious criminals, and the grim inspiration behind "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde." Part guidebook, part memoir, part social history, the book provoked both criticism and praise for its frank portrayal of Scotland's capital. (This is an automatically generated summary.)
