"Character and Opinion in the United States" by George Santayana is a philosophical treatise written in the early 20th century. This work explores the complex interplay between American character and societal opinions, as well as the intellectual environment of the time. The author, who has a background in philosophy, reflects on the nature of American thought, culture, and the moral dynamics at play in a rapidly evolving society. The opening of the text sets a reflective tone as Santayana clarifies his perspective as an observer rather than a native, emphasizing his intent to illuminate American character through a lens of appreciation and critique. He discusses the landscape of 19th-century intellectual life, specifically within New England, portraying a dichotomy between a rich, vibrant culture and a lack of genuine self-identity.
